Mary Magdalene All four Gospels identify Mary Magdalene by name as the first witness to the resurrection. Only one account of the resurrection appearance, she is alone and specifically told by Jesus to go —hence her title, “apostle” means “one who is sent”.. In the other accounts, she was a woman going to the tomb with the others. According to Biblical text, St. Mary Magdalene was “sent” by the Lord to proclaim His resurrection.
